MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis man was carjacked, and stuffed in the trunk of his car Sunday night at the Camelot Manor Apartment Complex near the airport.

Carjackers attacked Joe Ingram, 66, as he was leaving his car to go to his apartment at around nine in the evening.

"He said they had a gun on him, a big 'ol gun on him," Barbara Ingram, the victim's wife said. "They forced him inside the trunk, and locked him inside the trunk."

While the man was inside the trunk, a gun battle raged on outside. A witness said she heard one gun shot coming from that direction. Then she heard the kidnappers fire back. In all she says five gunshots were exchanged.

Investigators: arsonist burns Dollar General

Firefighters say they’re investigating the early morning arson of a Dollar General store in the 4700 block of South Third Monday.

Investigators say they’re not sure how the arsonist started the flames, but that the fire was started to cover up a burglary.

The fire department got the call just after 4:30 Monday morning and it took dozens of firefighters nearly 90 minutes to knock the flames down.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

No arrests have been made.

Incumbent Sharon Webb sizes up opponents in school board battle

By Jamel Major - bio | email

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The battle for several key positions on the Memphis City Schools' Board of Commissioners is heating up.

Memphis Flyer political analyst Jackson Baker says the race for the District 6 position on the board is going to be interesting for the six people hoping to unseat incumbent Sharon Webb.

"Sharon Webb must have known that when she gave that 'non-answer' answer in the mayoral debate last year, she was going to have a lot of competition this year," Baker said.

During the debate last August, Webb was asked to name two ways she could make Memphis a better city as Mayor.  Webb could only name one.  Wednesday, Webb talked about her frame of mind during that portion of the debate.

"I couldn't think to anything," she said. "My mind just went totally blank. I don't think that will have anything to do with the work that I've done on the school board."
