Suspect shoots man during attempted hotel robbery

Raines Station officers responded to a shooting at the American Inn located at 3265 Elvis Presley at approximately 11:06 p.m. on July 21.

Officers discovered 18-year-old Dipesh Patel had been shot inside the business. He was taken to The Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Patel is now listed in stable condition.

Preliminary investigation revealed that around 10:55 p.m. on July 21, a black male described as 35 to 40 years old, approached the outside check-in window and demanded money from the victim. The suspect was wearing a blue bandana on his face, white hat, white shirt and blue jeans.

MCS Regional Health Clincs to open Saturdays

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - To provide parents additional opportunities to have their children receive the necessary vaccinations or physicals required to attend school or participate in athletic activities, MCS Regional Health Clinics will be open Saturday, July 31 and Saturday, August 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mrs. Harriet Bynum Celebrates 100 years

Mrs. Harriet Bynum of Covington, TN will celebrate her 100th birthday on August 8, 2010. She was a farmer in her early years and employed by the "Peabody Hotel" until her retirement.

To commemorate 100 years, Mrs. Lou Boyd, niece, has arranged a celebration in her honor. The festivities will take place August 8, 2010 at the Graceland Nursing Center located at 1350 Farrow Rd. in Whitehaven (room across from station C) at 3pm.

New program makes getting utility assistance easier

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A new program should make obtaining utility assistance much easier for residents of Shelby County.

The high demand for utility assistance has been causing long lines at the Shelby County Community Services Agency office for weeks. Some people have waited hours to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance program.

Hair salons to offer free hairdos for students

PERFECT 10 Hair Salons will offer free back-to-school shampoo and sets for all Memphis City and Shelby County school aged girls, ages 5-12 on August 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mothers can also receive a free shampoo and set by donating $10 in new school supplies for the event.

PERFECT 10 Hair Salon believes that having a new hairstyle on the first day of school can help improve a child's confidence and increase self-esteem.

Mid-South man finds enormous beehive in his backyard

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - For one Mid-South resident, some uninvited guests are creating a lot of attention.

"About one week ago, I came outside to get some figs from the tree and noticed a big black spot on the wall," Johnson said Friday.

They came out of nowhere - roughly 20,000 honey bees, both outside and inside the brick walls of Johnson's Whitehaven home.
