MEMPHIS, TN—July 6, 2010, Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. released this statement today regarding bicycle lanes and the Engineering Division’s search for a new Bicycle/Pedestrian (Bike/Ped) Coordinator:

“Our capital improvement program (CIP) budget will pay for two significant repaving projects—Southern Avenue and Cooper Street—that will include bike lanes this year.  This will add many miles of bike lanes and connect many neighborhoods throughout the core of our city.

Organization brings young professionals and community leaders to the table for the first time
 
(July, 2010) MPACT Memphis, a young professional nonprofit founded in 2001 will hold a series of topical “MPACT Chats” in mid-to-late July. These chats are designed to bring together young professionals in the community, community leaders, successful entrepreneurs and civic leaders to examine the data MPACT found during their Voice of MPACT survey collection process almost a year ago.
 
“MPACT is looking for ways to engage not only our members and partner organizations, but also the community at large and find out how organizations are currently involved,” says Gwyn Fisher, MPACT’s Executive Director.

Election Commission invites Shelby Co. voters to inspect machines

The Shelby County Election Commission will hold voting machine inspections prior to the Aug. 5 elections.

The touch screen units to be used for Early Voting will be ready for inspection on Thursday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The touch screen units to be used for Election Day will be ready for inspection on Monday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anyone who wishes to inspect the machines should visit the Election Operations Center, located at 980 Nixon Drive in Memphis during the above times.

Sales Tax Holiday to provide savings for Tenn. shoppers

The fifth annual Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday will begin Friday, Aug. 6 and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 8. During this weekend, consumers can save almost 10 percent on tax-free clothing, school and art supplies and computer purchases.

Gov. Phil Bredesen said the holiday is intended to help families across the state.

"The holiday provides much needed savings for all Tennessee shoppers and prepares children for success by making sure they start the first day of school properly equipped with items they need," Bredesen said.

Summer Debate Institute Announced

This program is offered free of charge to all MCS high school students.  Non-MCS high school students may attend for a fee of $300.00. 
During the program we will prepare the students to debate the national high-school policy debate topic for 2010-2011.  We will provide instruction, core files and supplies.  Students must bring their own lunch, or money to purchase lunch on campus.  Students are also responsible for their own transportation.
Pre-Registration is required. Registration forms are available on the website, www.memphisdebate.org and must be completed and sent to:
