STAX students to attend 'Memphis Soul'

The president is about to get a taste of Memphis Soul.

The all star event will honor artists including Mavis Staples and Otis Redding with performances from Justin Timberlake, the Alabama Shakes, and Queen Latifah – to name a few.

Other special guests in attendance will be STAX students who made the trip from the Bluff City.

"In Performance at the White House: Memphis Soul" will be taped this Tuesday, April 9.

McDonald's GM accused of stealing from safe to pay for funeral

The golden arches boasts billions served worldwide, but the woman in charge at one Memphis McDonald's location just got served criminal charges from a January theft.

Police said general manager Samantha Matthews stole $1,533 cash from the change safe for personal use.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Matthews was in charge of the money and was the only person with the combination to the safe. Police investigators say they were unable to make contact with Matthews but that she admitted to company auditors that she took the cash to pay for a funeral.

Matthews is currently in jail at 201 Poplar, charged with theft of property between $1000 and $10,000. According to jail records, bond is set at $75,003.00.

Memphis food drive uses social media to encourage donations

A food drive that will be primarily supported on social media in Memphis hopes to replenish stock at the Mid-South Food Bank for the spring

The Mid-South Food Bank will host its second annual Good Friday Food Drive online on Friday, March 29.

This year’s food drive will rely on social media to spread the word and encourage support by using the hashtag #memfood. With social media, the Food Bank, along with Good Friday Food Drive’s official sponsors Easy Way Produce and First State Bank, will initiate a call-to-action to followers via Twitter.

“Mid-South Food Bank encourages everyone to get involved,” said Mid-South Food Bank Communications Director Marcia Wells. “Community food drives are an important source of food and funds to purchase food.”

Last year, the food bank received over $3,000 in donations online – the equivalent of 9,000 meals.

On Friday participants can donate at midsouthfoodbank.org. Also, donations can be made in person at the following locations:

Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Bring the kids out to T. O. Fuller State Park this Saturday to celebrate in the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The fun begins at 2pm.  This event is open to kids ages 1-13. There will be 2 age groups for the hunt. One group will have children ages 1-6 and the other ages 7-13. Children will need to bring their own baskets or bags for candy filled eggs. Parents must be present, but are not allowed to touch any of the eggs. Prizes will be awarded for special finds! Church helps hundreds in Easter spirit

Memphis' The Word Church is using the spirit of Easter to give free food and clothing to more than 400 needy families.

Congregation members are calling the event "Get Up Week". This Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. families will be able to pick up the free items at the church located at 3852 Park Avenue.

However, you must have a voucher to participate. The pastor said vouchers can be picked up at the church Monday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"So the people will be able to experience the love that our ministry wants to push out from the ministry to let people know that there is hope for tomorrow. Not only will it be the food basket given out, we'll have doctors on site who will be doing health screenings. We will have attorneys who will be here sharing with us, who will be sharing legal information," said pastor Aaron Litzey.
