Intersection to close over for the weekend

Officials are telling drivers to be aware this weekend.

The Brooks Road, Elvis Presley Boulevard intersection in Memphis will be shut down from Friday night until early Monday morning while the roadway is repaved.

It is part of a 5-year, $43 million project to improve the roadway that thousands of tourists take to visit Graceland.

Utilities along the targeted area will be placed underground.

There will be wider sidewalks, new traffic signals, crosswalks, bike facilities and lots of landscaping.

SCBE asks for parents' input

PROACT Search has been retained by the Shelby County Board of Education to help in searching for a new superintendent.

As one of the initial steps, the Board would like the community's input on the characteristics and skills most desired in the next superintendent.

The SCBE will hold a couple of different parent and community input sessions. The locations and dates include:

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will be conduct two sobriety checkpoints this Friday night, March 15, 2013, in an effort to battle impaired driving on county roadways.

The first of the two checkpoints will be conducted at the intersection of Hacks Cross and Meadow Vale from 8:30 until 10:30 p.m.

The second of the checkpoints will occur at the intersection of Hacks Cross and Lowrance from 11:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m.

More than 16,000 people are killed every year in the United States due to impaired driving.  Another 305,000 injuries occur due to impaired driving.  Twenty-seven percent of those killed on Tennessee highways are crashes where alcohol was involved.

The checkpoints are fully funded by federal grant dollars.

Memphis Fire Department conducts smoke detector blitz

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - The Memphis Fire Department took advantage of the daylight saving time switch to kick off a massive smoke detector blitz Sunday.

Teenager, adult shot in S. Memphis

(WMC-TV) - Two people were shot in the 300 block on Silverage Avenue in South Memphis Sunday night, according to Memphis Police.

Memphis Police found one teenager, and one adult with gunshot wounds.

The adult was taken to The MED by ambulance, and the teenager was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. Both victims are in non-critical condition according to police.

There are possibly other victims, but none have been located. No arrests have been made.

This investigation is ongoing. Action News 5 crews are at the scene learning more about what happened.
