Excitement filled the air Sunday afternoon as Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and other city leaders welcomed home their State Football Champions, the Whitehaven High Tigers.

The Tigers are fresh off of their dramatic win against the storied Maryville team which had won the state championship for the previous two years.

This is Whitehaven's first state championship win, defeating two-time defending champion Maryville, 36-35, in a wild BlueCross Bowl Class 6A title game.

Whitehaven ends the year 15-0 and ended the Rebels' 43-game winning streak.

"When I saw our young men, our champions on the football team crying, it caused me to cry.  We had a whole household as we watched this Whitehaven Superbowl take place.  Tears were just everywhere" said Whitehaven High Tigers supporter Beveryly Davis.

Of course the team said its great to be back home and it feels even better to be champions.
