Newborn tests positive for drugs, mom charged

Newborn tests positive for drugs, mom charged

A new mother is in jail after her baby was born with drugs in his system.

On November 19th, Terrikah Clinton gave birth to a son at Methodist South Hospital. According to an affidavit of complaint, both the infant and his meconium tested positive for cocaine and marijuana. She has been charged with reckless endangerment.

Clinton is the second new mother facing criminal charges in recent months. In August, police charged Mildred Chapman with reckless endangerment after her infant tested positive for cocaine and opiates. At the time, Vince Higgins, spokesman for the Shelby County District Attorney's office, told Action News 5 that law enforcement takes these situations very seriously.

"It is more common than any of us want to admit," Higgins said. "Of course, in this day in age, we want to protect children."

The Bartlett Police Department says someone may have taken potshots at some of its officers overnight.

Three officers were standing outside of a convenience store in the 6100 block of Stage Road, just after midnight Friday when they heard several shots fired nearby.

The officers believed the gunshots were fired from inside the Bartlett Heights Apartments, across the street from where they were standing.

Man wanted for murdering mother of five

Man wanted for murdering mother of five

Police say they know who killed a mother of five this week, but they need the public’s help bringing the man to justice.

Lataska Applewhite was found shot to death inside a home in the 300 block of Stoneham, near the intersection of East Shelby Drive and Neely, Tuesday.

Investigators say Michael Davis, the victim’s boyfriend, is responsible for the crime and have issued a warrant for his arrest.

Davis is accused of second degree murder.

If you know anything that could help investigators find him, call CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH.

Deputies increase patrols over Thanksgiving

Whether you live in Tennessee or are just passing through, drivers beware. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across the state between now and the busy Thanksgiving travel weekend to crack down on traffic safety violations.

More Cops, More Stops is the state’s latest campaign to help save more lives on our roadways. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will be out in force to remind all drivers and passengers to not drink and drive, always buckle up, obey the speed limit, and eliminate all distractions in the vehicle while driving.

Stopping and arresting alcohol-impaired drivers will be a top priority of the campaign. In 2009, nearly one-third of those killed in crashes on our Tennessee highways involved drivers or motorcycle operators with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or above at the time of the deadly crash.

Police looking for hit and run driver

Police are looking for the driver responsible for a hit and run accident that sent a pedestrian to the hospital last week.

Investigators say the 25-year-old woman was trying to cross East Holmes Road near Lock Lomond when she was hit just after 5:45 p.m. on November 14.

The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

While there’s no description of the vehicle that hit the woman, police hope someone has information that could lead to an arrest.

If you know anything that could help solve this case, call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.

Man charged with carrying gun in school parking lot

Man charged with carrying gun in school parking lot

Trying to avoid a traffic stop Friday night landed a Memphis man in even more trouble, police say.

Officers spotted a Mercury Sable with an expired license plate around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Tulane and Holmes. Before the police had a chance to stop the vehicle, the driver parked in the lot at J.P. Freeman Middle School where a football game was taking place. The officers flipped on their lights and began the traffic stop when they spotted a pistol tucked into Cortez Thornton’s pants.

Thornton, who has a valid handgun permit, told police he turned into the school to avoid getting pulled over. However, Thornton should’ve chosen a different parking lot to pull into, police say, because it’s illegal to carry a gun on school grounds.

Thornton is in jail on $3,500 bond.
