Mid-South Aging Commission raising awareness of elderly abuse | Events
(WMC-TV)- A local organization hopes to spread the word about mistreatment to older people with “world elder abuse awareness day.”
According to the Administration on Aging website, the mission of this day is to provide an opportunity for communities by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic methods affecting elder abuse and neglect
The day was created on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.
This Aging Commission of the Mid-South sponsored event wants to fight for and support “older adults and adults with disabilities in leading independent, meaningful, and dignified lives in their own homes and communities as long as possible.”
Lindenwood Christian Church will host a program on June 15th in honor of the day of elder abuse awareness. The doors will open to the public at 9:00 a.m. and there will be a continental breakfast provided by Fork It Over catering.
Throughout the day there will be various speakers such as City Mayor A.C. Wharton, County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell Jr., and Governor Bill Haslam.
This event is expected to end at 1 p.m.
