City giving gardeners free mulch

City of Memphis Public Works will provide free mulch for Memphis residents Friday, April 22 in observance of Earth Day.

Beginning at dawn, free mulch will be available in the Liberty Bowl parking lot, located on Hollywood, just south of Central. The mulch will be provided on a load-your-own, while-it-lasts, basis and residents must provide their own loading equipment and containers. Commercial businesses and non Memphis residents are not eligible.

The double ground and aged landscape quality mulch is derived from the more than 100,000 tons of trees and other wood wastes collected and processed by City of Memphis Solid Waste Management in the last year.

Since the city began recycling in 1995, over 1.6 million tons of trees and other yard debris have been recycled, thus saving an estimated $25 million in landfill disposal. Also, this will be the 38th free mulch event provided by public works since yard waste recycling began in 1995.
