The 20th Annual ROCK 103 Ronald McDonald House Radiothon is underway, continuing a tradition of raising money for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis.

Tri-State Defender's Smith named "History Maker in the Making"

The publisher and president of the Tri-State Defender, one of the longest running newspapers for African American news and an essential part of the Civil Rights movement in Memphis, is listed as "100 History Makers in the Making" by The Grio.com.

The site credits Bernal Smith II with rolling out a social media strategy that has helped increase the paper's sales by 15% and "adapting tradition to modern-day technology." And all in less than a year at the helm of the historic paper.

Smith also formed a news partnership with WMC TV 5 which helped enhance news coverage, increase marketing and improve awareness of the Tri-State Defender brand.

Black HIV Awareness Day in Memphis

The Memphis TGA Ryan White Program, which provides free primary medical and support services to people living with HIV/AIDS in Shelby and surrounding counties, is collaborating with several community organizations to observe National Black HIV Awareness Day, Monday, Feb. 7.

Free HIV testing will be conducted on Friday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., at St. Andrew A.M.E. Church Community Life Center (867 South Parkway East) to raise awareness about the importance of HIV treatment. Memphis Ryan White Program staff members will be available to answer questions and will distribute Know Now. Live Longer. campaign materials to everyone undergoing HIV testing.

Numbers show teen pregnancy higher in certain zip codes

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - New numbers show how critical the teen pregnancy crisis in Memphis and Shelby County really is, especially in certain zip codes within the county.

Teen birth rates in the Memphis-Shelby County area are high when compared to similar cities across the country.

"We have a lot of issues that a lot of urban areas deal with here in Memphis," Rebecca Terrell of the Memphis Center for Reproductive Health said Wednesday. "We are a big city."

Statistics from a recent report by the Urban Child Institute say in 2009, 15 percent of babies born in Shelby County were to teen mothers - approximately 5 percent above the national average.  Additionally, according to the institute's report, black teens are three times more likely than whites to give birth.

Former Shelby County Mayors Bill Morris and Jim Rout will join Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell and Memphis City Mayor A C Wharton to host a Super Bowl XLV watch party and auction on the front lawn at Graceland to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Mayor Luttrell visits Whitehaven library

The fourth Saturday of every month at 12:30 p.m., community leaders and elected officials read stories at the Whitehaven Branch Library, 4120 Millbranch. Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell will be this month’s special guest.

Free ReadyShelby calendars available

Free 2011 ReadyShelby Emergency Management Calendars are available for distribution. The 2011 calendar sponsored by the Assissi Foundation of Memphis and International Paper contains tips on emergency preparedness appropriate for each month of the year.

Businesses, home-owner associations, churches and non-profit groups are encouraged to distribute these free calendars to residents. Individuals may also stop by any of the county's city halls to pick up a calendar for personal use or to deliver to friends and family.
